British values

Democracy

Democracy allows everybody to have their voice heard. In a democracy the people from a group or community choose who they want to represent them and put forward their views.

Elections

The main elections are held every four or five years. They are held to see who will lead our country. Any person over 18 is entitled to vote.

Government

The political party with the most votes becomes the Government. Members are in charge of different departments such as Education or Health. They meet and discuss important matters.

Individual Liberty

You are free to make your own choices. It is important to think about your decisions and make the right ones.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect means respecting everyone whether they are similar or different from yourself. ‘Treat others as you would like to be

treated yourself.’

Parliament

The candidates who win the votes in their area become Members of Parliament and get a seat in the House of Commons.

The Rules

Laws are important to keep everyone safe. Laws govern and protect us. There are consequences when laws are broken.

Tolerance

Other people may not have the same faith or beliefs as you but we need to understand and accept this.

Voting

During an election every person over 18 is entitled to vote. Women first voted in 1928. By voting you make your voice heard.
